Have you ever noticed?—people, no matter how beautiful or desirable, invariably will, if observed closely while going about their daily business of keeping alive, begin to seem like monsters.

Donald Antrim, The Verificationist

Obviously this is great, and it out of nowhere reminded me of Angela Chase: “I mean if you stop to think about chewing, like what it really is, how people just do it, like, in public?” (1:07 on the link)

This photo of Donald Antrim is from BOMB issue 58, 1997. The following quote comes from the accompanying interview, conducted upon the release of Antrim’s second novel, The Hundred Brothers:

TB Your books are very, very funny. Why?

DA The books are constructed of interlocking set pieces, and the set pieces are often defined by particular moments of physical violence or self-abasement, a rise and fall of pain and suffering. What could be funnier than that?

Antrim’s three novels have all recently been reissued. Elect Mr. Robinson for a Better World will be available June 5th.
